Ihsan trained at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance in London, United Kingdom.

In 1997 he began his professional career as a member of the National Youth Dance Company, London. In 1999 he was invited by Matthew Bourne to dance in his company Adventures in Motion Pictures. From 2001 until 2004 he was a soloist at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München, Germany followed by a further 3 years with Introdans, Arnhem in the Netherlands. In 2007 he joined the Bern Ballet and since August 2009 he has been a member of the Tanz Luzerner Theater in Switzerland under the direction of Kathleen McNurney.

During his professional career he worked with choreographers such as Mats Ek, Jiri Kylián, Paul Lightfoot / Sol Leon, Hans van Manen, Nils Christe, Matthew Bourne, Alexander Ekman, Wayne McGregor, Ken Ossola, Georg Reischl, Hofesh Shechter and Cayetano Soto. He danced repertoire from Mark Baldwin, Maurice Béjart, William Forsythe, David Parsons, Renato Zanella, Twyla Tharp amongst others. He works extensively with the choreographer Patrick Delcroix, for whom he also regularly assists.

He won the silver medal at the Fewster Cecchetti Scholarship and subsequently represented the United Kingdom at the International Ballet Competition in Melbourne, where he was finalist.

Ihsan Rustem began to choreograph in 1999 at Rambert and has since created works for the Tanz Luzerner Theater in Switzerland, Northwest Dance Project in Portland, OR. USA, National Youth Dance Company in the United Kingdom and the choreographic workshops of Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz München in Germany, Introdans Arnhem in the Netherlands, Dance Made in Bern for the Bern Ballet and Dancemakers for the Tanz Luzerner Theater in Switzerland.

In 2011 State of Matter, a piece created for the Northwest Dance Project, won him both the Audience Choice Award (Publikumspreis) at the 25th International Competition for Choreographers Hannover and the Sadler’s Wells Global Dance Contest 2011.

He also teaches classes and workshops all around Europe.

Since last year he has been a member of the artistic team of Interdans as a choreographer.
